Planets and Stars - April 18, 2002

There were 100s of parents and students to view the five planets aligned in the west-southwest sky.

Members of the Royal Astronomical Society set up their telescopes so that our students could get a close view.

Jupiter, Saturn, Mars, Venus and Mercury were all in a line.

We could see the four moons of Jupiter around the planet.

Thanks to Ms. Fitzpatrick for setting this up for our Grade 9 students studying astronomy.

This telescope was set on Saturn. We could see the rings around Saturn.

When it got darker, we could see Titan, the moon of Saturn.

Point out the alignment for me!!                             Oh no! she's changing the focus again!!

This telescope showed all the craters in the moon. It looked pock-marked!!

This telescope brought bright Venus into sharp focus!

Using the paper chart, we could figure out which star was which! That deserved a phone call home!

Selling snacks to raise money for Costa Rica!

CBC News was on hand to film the event!

Maybe we'll be "stars" on TV!

One last look at the moons of Jupiter!!

What an amazing evening!
