The press release, describing this victory in detail, is posted below the photo. I know it's true because I watched and listened to these students doing hours of preparation in the library. Way to go Law students in Tosh's class!!

Cawthra Students Win Important Legal Victory

Four Mississauga students from Cawthra Park Secondary school have won a provincial legal contest known as the Charter Challenge.

Students taking Grade 11 law at Cawthra examined a hypothetical case involving an improper drug search at a high school. They debated on-line, researched relevant Supreme Court rulings and wrote a legal brief stating their views. Four Cawthra students--Alissa Cait, Nicholas Roadhouse, Jeremy Tozer, and Michelle Van Rassell--advanced to the finals, which were held at Osgoode Hall on Wednesday, April 13, 2005.

The case required extensive research and preparation. The four Cawthra students presented their case with eloquence, style and confidence in front of an Ontario Superior Court judge and two senior lawyers. In a 2-1 ruling, the panel sided with the Cawthra students, who were arguing for the appellant.

The Charter Challenge is a joint project between the Education Resource Network of Ontario and the Ontario Bar Association. Both finalist teams earned a financial award for their school and a plaque. For more information, please contact Ms. Kirby-McIntosh (teacher) at 905-274-1271.
