The Flood of 2006
An unfortunate juxtaposition of circumstances
led to a flood in an upstairs Science Lab on Wed. Jan. 4.
The water had all night to flow downstairs to the open area, into the library,
and on down to the cafeteria.
There was almost one foot of water in the Open Area.
Some drywall and baseboards had to be replaced.
It was amazing how quickly the damage was repaired.
The custodian said it looked as if a Tsunami had rolled through.
Water from the Open Area leaked down to the cafeteria. Ceiling tiles had to
be replaced.
From the Open Area, the water seeped under the emergency doors into the back
part of the library.
The new carpet tiles had to be pulled up.
Here are some tiles drying.
Water seeped under the door in the photo and into the back part of the library.
Water spread all the way to the window area.
The front two-thirds of the library, including the computer area, were not touched
by the spreading water.
It's the back third of the library that suffered the most water damage, particularly
our new carpet tiles!
Note that videos and DVDs are okay because the shelves are high.
Note the industrial strength dehumidifiers for drying.
The floor tiles that are trapped under the stacks are rolled and dried.
How fortunate that very few books were on the bottom shelf.
The work crews had everything back in place by Monday morning! It was
hard to believe it had happened.
And to think, it all started right here! Good thing Ms. Phelan was on vacation!
The water would have been waist-deep on her, judging from the repair line (new
drywall) behind her.
