We worked through a peer-editing sheet for the Inquiry Essay today. We also talked about additional manipulative techniques for the narrative essay.
Homework: Re-read the Mark Twain essay I gave out on Friday and be prepared to discuss the various manipulateive techniques that Twain employs.

We began our final unit - Telling a Story - today in class.
Homework: Finish your essay and come to class prepared with a typed copy for editing on Monday. Be sure to bring your "graphic novel story" for class tomorrow.


November 26, 2008
We finished our class-work on the Inquiry essay today. Unless there are burning questions tomorrow I expect we'll be able to move on to our enrichment for 1984 and the introduction of our final unit - Telling a Story.
Homework: Bring any enrichment material you have for 1984 to class tomorrow. Finish your essay over the weekend and come to class prepared with a typed copy for editing on Monday.

We began our final discussions of 1984 today with an exploration of Newspeak. We also worked on the Inquiry Essay.
Homework: You should now have the opening paragraph and the body paragraphs in draft form (full sentences).

Homework: Finish the rough draft of your opening paragraph and bring it to class tomorrow.

We finished discussing Winston's anti-hero qualities today.
Homework: Continue to work on your Inquiry Essay - bring a second draft of your outline to class on Monday.

We spent most of today's class talking about the structure of the Inquiry Essay. We also worked on finishing the "Developing an Inquiry Question" process.
Homework: Bring a finished Inquiry Question and a BRIEF essay outline that addresses that question to class tomorrow (point form only - be sure to include your required elements in the body section of your outline).

We finished watching V for Vendetta today and we had a brief discussion about its connections to 1984. We also worked on the IQ (inquiry question) and the Enrichment activities for 1984.

We continued our study of 1984 today through examining a method of inquiry called "Dense Questioning" (a copy of my notes is include on your handouts page under Unit 3).
We also reviewed the essay assignment for 1984 (a copy of this rubric is also online). If you were away today you must see me to get your topic assignments on Monday.
Homework: Continue reading 1984 - you must have the novel completely read for Monday. There will be a short quiz on Parts 2&3 on Monday.

We continued our study of 1984 today - we pictographed 2 major ideas for character, setting, symbol, and idea and then tried to find a quotation that unified 4 of the 8 pictographs.
