| Fireworks
exploded in technicolour brilliance across the night sky above
Wonderland |
| last
night, marking the 25th anniversary of Ontario’s amusement
park. Imported from |
| China,
the fireworks included multi-hued rockets, orange-gold whiz-bangers
and the |
| ever
popular silvery starbursts. |
| The
park was the brainchild of entrepreneur Dave Morrison.“I’ve
always been a Disneyland |
| fan,”
said Morrison, “and I thought Canadians deserved a park
of their own.” On May 24, 1980, |
| Wonderland
opened. Its location just north of the city of Toronto guaranteed
easy accessibility |
| to
many. |
| Featuring
thrilling rides, including Canada’s highest roller coaster,
the park also offers front-line |
| entertainment,
six theme restaurants, as well as a variety of games and concession
stands. |
| Half
a million people watched last night's show, which also marked
the seasonal opening. |
| The
park will feature sound-and-light shows during the summer as
it continues |
| to
celebrate its silver anniversary. |
| Wonderland
is open daily from 8 a.m. to midnight, May 1 to September 30
inclusive. |
| Cost
is $30 for adults, $25 for students (13 to 17) and seniors (65+),
and $20 for children |
| 12
years and under. Seasonal passes for individuals and families
are available. |

| Comments:
The above news report is based on facts. It answers the questions:
Who?, What?, |
| Where?,
When? and Why? The beginning paragraph has most of the important
information. All |
| subsequent
paragraphs are shorter (inverted pyramid). The last two paragraphs
contain inconsequential information |
| so
that the editor is at liberty to eliminate them if necessary.
Also, very few people will read to |
| the
end of a news report and therefore, important information should
not appear there. Sentences |
| are
well written and flow well. Good use of transitions and quotations. |
