Written Answers (Answer in full and correctly written sentences)

9.  Carter and Rodney's mother wants her sons to have "a taste of nature." (paragraph 1)
Explain why, using evidence from the selection.

Carter and Rodney's mother wants her sons to have "a taste of nature" by leaving
the city and driving to the country. She wants her sons to experience the "overwhelming
night-time silence." She wants them to know how to set up a tent and how to bravely
survive in the woods with just a tent.

Comments: This response answers the question using information from the selection.

10.  Using information in the story and your own ideas, explain why Rodney would
not want to tell his mother about the encounter with the raccoons. (paragraph 15)

Rodney doesn't want to tell his mother because he'd have to admit that he was afraid.
A few little sounds scared him enough to believe that a bear was outside his tent. He
wants his mother to think he is brave. I also think his mother would be angry that he
risked an encounter with a bear. He should have gone for help. Also, his mother may
be angry that he didn't properly store the food which attracted the animals in the first place.

Comments: This response answers the question using information from the selection. The
last three sentences give the writer's opinion about other reasons he might not want to
tell his mom. This is also a requirement of the question.
