Tips for Notetaking

 

By hand

  • Record the source information (Title, Author, Publisher, website etc)
  • Read the original information. Cover it up. Take notes in your own words.
  • Record direct quotes using quotation marks and don’t forget to record the page number

 

 

 

On a computer
Colour Method

  • Copy the source information (title, author, publisher, database, website)
  • Copy the information directly from the website or other electronic resource.
  • Colour all copied information in red.
  • Read the information in red.
  • Scroll down past the copied information and set the text colour back to black
  • Record notes in your own words

 

On a computer
Column Method

  • Set your document to landscape
  • Make a two column table
  • Copy the source or website address to the first column
  • Copy the actual information directly under the source informatin
  • Highlight useful quotes in red and add page numbers where appropriate
  • After reading the original, make notes in your own words in the second column



Be Organized. If you're organized, you won't copy someone else's work by mistake.
